Plot: Set against the action-packed world of Mixed Martial Arts, NEVER BACK DOWN is the story of Jake Tyler, a tough kid who leads with his fists, and, often, with his heart. Jake Tyler, played by Sean Far...( read more read more... )is, is the new kid in town with a troubled past. He has recently moved to Orlando, Florida with his family who has relocated to support his younger brother's shot at a professional tennis career. Jake was a star athlete on the football team at home, but in this new city he is an outsider with a reputation for being a quick tempered brawler.

Making an attempt to fit in, at the invitation of a flirtatious classmate, Baja (Amber Heard), Jake goes to a party where he is unwittingly pulled into a fight with a bully named Ryan McDonald (Cam Gigandet). While he is defeated and humiliated in the fight, a classmate introduces himself to Jake and tells him about the sport known as Mixed Marshall Arts (MMA). He sees a star in Jake and asks that he meet with his mentor, Jean Roqua, played by Djimon Hounsou (Blood Diamond, In America).

It is immediately apparent to Jake that MMA is not street fighting, but rather an art form he wants to master. Roqua will take Jake under his wing, but it is up to Jake to find the patience, discipline, willingness and reason within him to succeed. For Jake, there is much more at stake than mere victory. His decision will not just settle a score; it will define who he is.

Ok I am embarrased to admit I actually liked it. lol. The story was so so but the actual fight scene I really liked. Djimon was yummy as always and the young kids were pretty good. Love me a good fighting movie and I thought this was it. lol

A troubled teenager Jake (Sean Faris, Reunion) moves with his single mother to a new town where he gets picked on by bullies who have been trained in the martial arts. In response, fish-out-of-water teen trains with inscrutable foreigner Jean Roqua (Djimon Hounsou, Amistad) in preparation for a showdown with head bully Ryan (played by the chiseled Cam Gigandet). While Never Back Down is extremely violent, think Fight Club with a younger, less-talented cast: the violence is, for the most part, tedious. This is largely because the leads are not compelling: Jake is a Tom Cruise doppelganger without the charm, and Baja is a lifeless romantic interest. The one exception to this is Ryan; though he is a one-note villain, basically a teenage vortex of pure evil, he still manages to be a compelling foil. Ryan is the bully you love to hate. Yet, despite its never-ending list of flaws, Never Back Down is visually and audibly stimulating, complete with a catchy sound track, creative camera zooms and angles, ultra-loud sound effects, and CGI-enhanced hardbodies. In fact, the film might be worth a look if you're in the mood for a brainless, numbing, recycled heap that will assault your senses, and there is an audience who loves this kind of movie.

I really enjoyed this movie. It was like a Fight Club High School version. I really really liked this movie. Great Plot, Great Acting, Great Action, and a great ending. I think that this movie deserves alot more than what it got. I never even heard of it until the DVD came out. I really really liked this movie. Go out and rent it if you havent seen it, its very good.

I was kinda surprised, the movie was quite entertaining. I thought the fighting movie genre was so outdated, but the movie delivered a fresh new look in this particular genre.

This movie is nothing like Fight Club. Anyone who says it is has never seen Fight Club or didn't understand it when they did.
This is a copy of Karate Kid pure and simple with the addition of MMA fighting. It's a simple movie about getting back at the bully that beat you up at the beginning of the flick. It's not meant to be any deeper than that. Just sit back and have fun with it and stop analyzing it to death.

Are you kidding me? This steaming piece of donkey shit aimed at teenage MMA "fans" is "like Fight Club"? I just watched Fight Club again to make sure, but Fight Club is NOT about fighting. If you think Fight Club is about fighting, then you're as dense as a lead baseball cap.

Yes, the underlying plots are different, but the whole fight plot is a plaguarism of Fight Club.

this film is actually nothin like fight club? yeh, it has a place where people go and fight but that is it? the story line is different, everything is different, its more of an up to date karate kid, which in my eyes is a sick idea, this film was really good maybe the beginning of martial art movies again lol

It seems to me, from description and adverts, that this is going to be a rip off of fight club.

hell, he even has a similar name! Tyler Durden-Fight Club
    Jake Tyler-Never Back Down.

plus iv'e heard the line "im angry all the time" in a film before. now i'm not saying this is patented to one film, but it sure does reminde me of when it was spoken in "Crash".
