This might be the best coming of age story I've seen. I've read the novella, which is better, as cliche as that is, and I loved the story already.
But Rob Reiner does a great job of bringing the story straight to life without compromising any of the important parts that make this story so special and heart-wrenching.
It's powerful to see 4 boys bond like they do over the course of one trip, and it's realistic to see them grow apart, not talk to each other, live, die, etc.
I'd almost recommend reading the book after watching this movie. It's like the book is just a more detailed version of the movie, that's how accurate it is.
The child acting is as good as you can expect from ppl so young, and the rest of the acting is good as well. Richard Dreyfuss does a great job narrating the little he does.
For being 20+ years old, this is still one of the more powerful movies you will see.
"I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?"

I think it is the best movie of all time :)
River Pheonix is the best actor, and I'm terribly sad that a gem like him was lost to something as stupid as drugs.

I love this movie! From the first time I saw it was my favorite movie. River Phoenix was always my favorite character as (Chris Chambers) in this movie. And after I saw it I knew I had to see more of his movies and I love them all! He is my favorite actor of all time and trully a one-of-a-kind.
