A totally WONderful movie - lifted from the best-selling memoir by Terry 'Tuff ' Ryan. The story of a mother (played by Julianne Moore) in Defiant, Ohio during the 50s & 60s who keeps her large family with 10 children afloat by winning contests. Despite her husband's (played by Woody Harrelson) drinking and emotional outbursts she remains optimistic & ever resourceful. The end of the movie includes many of the actual Ryan children & the special features offers real family photos during the time this movie depicts. A movie I'd recommend to most.
great movie back in the day of jiggles, what a time. glad to see the family survive on what the mother had to go through.
Awesome true story of a mother of 10 who enters sweepstakes and wins prizes that will support her family throughout their childhood.
I thought this movie was endearing. Sweet and funny. Memorable...especially since it was based on a true story.
This was fantastic...I had no interest in it what so ever, but just by chance I ended up watching it and I was taken...
This was truly amazing...
To see one woman harbour so much love and optimism and show so much strength...with an alcoholic husband, ten children to nuture and teach and a world of everyday, and not so everyday struggles and strifes to face...
This...this is a must see...
It is sure to resinate with anyone who has a family, or is just starting a family of their own...and it may even serve as a lesson to those of us who haven't even started yet ;)...two thumbs way up!
This was a cute movie and I wish I had this mother's optimism. I would have kicked the alcoholic father out as soon as I found out we were going to lose our house b/c he took out a second mortgage without telling me. Her way of sustaining her family amused me b/c I have won a few contests in my life as well!
"The true story of how a mother raised ten kids on twenty-five words or less" ini adalah film yang sangat meyenangkan. perjuangan seorang ibu membesarkan anak-anaknya dengan penuh keceriaan di depan anak-anaknya dan ini diangkat dari sebuah biografi. suaminya seorang pemabuk dan sang ibu sendiri seorang yang sangat pintar dan penuh keberuntungan dalam merangkai kata-kata hingga memenangkan berbagai macam kuis sebagai sala satu penghasilannya. gw selalu suka julian moore dengan model dan setting jaman dahulu
I wasn't sure about this one but as soon as it started I was hooked
It has so much family dynamic about a large family with an alcoholic father who seems really sorry whenever he hurts his family through his actions.
It also shows a mother who keeps her family a float and teaches her children to be strong and to reach for the stars
definitely a good movie
I guess this movie was OK. Not to fault the actors or anything; they were fine. Good to Evelyn for holding her family together. It is just that I will have forgotten I'd ever seen this movie in two weeks time.
Woody Harrelson is awesome in this movie as a drunken crappy father. "I'm a chump in a slump, and I live in a dump. SANDWICH." Other wise, the rest of the movie was some inspirational overcoming adverstiy story that I failed to pay attention to.
This movie is not for everyone .. it is not Happy Days!... it is a true story about real people without the rose color glasses... times have changed since the 1950s and yet the mom's spirit not to give up is a lesson we all could learn from.
This movie had some wonderful lines in it "I don't need you to make me happy, I just need you to leave me alone when I am." or "Lets go to bed. I'm tired of this day. I need a new one." Julianna Moore was amazing in it, I love the whole cast, and the story of Evelyn Ryan.
I enjoyed this movie though I know it did not do well in the theaters. I usually like the setting of the 50's for movies because of the nostalga of it. This was an interesting and unique story. The leads in this did a great job!
This movie was heart warming and tear jerking both,Julianna Moore I applaud her for such a sensational job she did in this movie.
I couldn't keep my eyes off the TV when I was watching this film. It's a very good story and well acted although I have to ask, did people really talk like that in the 50's??
Moore plays a woman with 10 children. Although her husband works as a machinist, she basically provides for the family by winning all sorts of contests for all kinds of big prizes, including big cash prizes. The woman is a master of winning these things. It's the one thing that's keeping her family together. She's definitely the hero and the one person everyone looks up to. Definitely an inspiration. I don't want to spoil anything, so I'll stop at that, but I will say that Moore does a great job with her role. Moore's husband in the movie, played by Woody Harrelson with emotional conviction and healthy dose of humanity, has a drinking problem and is a big source of tension inside the household. The film is beautifully layered with symbols of motherhood and Catholicism, none of which are so obvious as to interfere with the lighthearted moments that make the film captivating. Anderson deftly transitions from the high points of the family's success to the terrible depths of their despair, capturing the audience as they share in the Ryan's joys and sorrows. Anderson's hard work in showing the families dynamic is most evident however in the cohesiveness of the Ryan children, all of whom look like a potential genetic pairing between Moore and Harrelson, and all of whom seemed enthusiastic about their work in the film. when asked what he learned from his more experienced co-stars, Robert Clarke, who plays the Ryan's oldest son Dick, mentioned Harrelson's multitude of approaches to a scene and Moore's constant professionalism. Ellory Potterfield (Tuff) commented that for her. The Prize Winner takes you back to that time in American history when the thought of winning and capturing "The American Dream" was one you could accomplish with hard work and talent. Julianne Moore makes the film all the more powerful with her portrayal of an American mother who will use her brains and determination to keep her family together. This film is one of the best to come along in 2005.
Wonderful, Julianne Moore was just magnificent, I really enjoyed this movie worth it made me laugh, made me cry and it was just a wonderful story.
Surprisingly good. I didin't expect much of this movie but it's style and the uplifting story really got to me. Takes you back to the 50's in a wonderful, and real, way!
I found that this movie was great when it was playing in the background and I was doing something else.
great movie about one womans perseverance to give her family a great life, and raise a family of twelve on 28 words or less.
It's a super good movie, I took off a start for language. There were bad words you didn't want your family to hear. But otherwise it was a good movie.
Julianne Moore impresses me in most of her roles, but this film portrays a prize-chasing, nearly destitute family as true winners. Odd themes involving marriage and annoying, pretentious jingle-writing. On the bright side, Laura Dern never looked so gorgeous.
