Star Wars: The Clone Wars
|
''This is where the fun begins!''
As the Clone Wars sweep through the galaxy, the heroic Jedi Knights struggle to maintain order and restore peace...
Matt Lanter: Anakin Skywalker (voice)
Clone Wars interested me mainly due to the fact it's animated and its another story derived from the saga. As soon as it begins we the audience are thrown straight away into the story, leaving us little time to soak it in but we manage.
Clone Wars, obviously is set between the events of Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith. If you have ever played the Star Wars: Battlefront series of games then you will be right at home with Clone Wars. We have such things as ship dogfights, infantry skirmishes and frantic chases all displayed with gloriously captured animation.
The main story that Clone Wars executes, is one of Jabba the Hutt's son who has been mysteriously kidnapped. Predictably Anakin and Obi-Wan are chosen to sort this matter out while Count Dooku, Ventruss and Sidious do there best to deter them for their own means. General Grievous isn't in this story at all.
The voices are all recognizable to their respective characters although alot of the original actors who took part on the prequels understandably haven't returned. Two I know of that did decide to return were Anthony Daniels and Samuel L Jackson, who as C-3PO and Mace Windu, give their character's life. Although they are mainly sub characters here.
The new voices such as Tom Kane voicing Yoda, or Ian Abercrombie as Palpatine are pretty spot on with their accurate tones and accents.
James Arnold Taylor voicing Obi-Wan Kenobi does a bit too much of a good job elaborating on the English accent a little too much.
Asajj Ventress, the Sith Assassin wasn't in it as much as I thought she would be. She does however make an evil impression and have a memorable light sabre frenzied battle with Obi-Wan which made for some sparkling show of light and colour.
Another nice thing about Clone Wars is the fact that it's got a perfect blend of humour and seriousness. We are treated to the cute little son of Jabba, the Huttlet, Droids saying dumb comical little remarks, and a new apprentice Padawan in the guise of Ahsoka Tano. She injects the story with some much needed freshness.
So on the whole Clone Wars was alot better than I thought it may be. Some fun and brilliantly captured moments, all animated accurately. Only things I was disappointed with, was that posters misled me with, was the fact Yoda has his light Sabre out. In the film he doesn't even use his Sabre, talk about false advertising. Little things like this or the whole sub-plot and diminishing qualities of narration did spoil some of Clone Wars.
On the whole Clone Wars is a brilliant choice for the family, children or anyone who is a fan of animation or Star Wars. Still love the Clone Wars cartoon series they used to have on TV, which even was 2D had alot of depth to it and artistic vision.
The Clone Wars film does the whole thing in 3D and results in a glorious explosion of light, colour, and fun. |

Even with this, Lucas can screw it up. Oh look, lets fill in the gaps between part 2 and 3.... WHO GIVES A RATS ASS. Honestly, how can you care for the droid and clone armies? Die, and the make more. At the end of the day, it really doesnt matter. I would have rather, Lucas made Animated movie for after Return of the Jedi, I mean everyone is still alive to do the voices, Mark Hamil, Carrie Fisher, Harrison Ford. Enough with the prequels please Hollywood! ... I think Lucas should put this franchise to rest and make some other movie.... or better yet, just advise on the special effects and let someone else Direct.. just like in Empire Strikes Back, which surprise surprise, Lucas hates the most. Fool. But young kids will like this movie. thats all. |

Enjoyable if you accept it for what it is, a cartoon aimed primarily at kids. Ziro's scenes are vastly improved by thinking of him as Cartman the Hutt. Asajj Ventress is nowhere near as hot here as in the comics, but still, I'm happy enough to have a female villain on film in this franchise (take that, Lucas). |

Well, the graphics were very good, it was worth seeing just for the animation techniques, but the voice actiing was kinda rubbish. It was also worth seeing just for Count Dooku's beard or Ventress' slapheadedness. |

Better than I thought it would be, hilarious at times, and completely over the top. If you're looking for a mid-summer laugh and you've skipped Pineapple Express, Tropic Thunder is good for some laughs. Every open ended joke ends up closed by the end. With an all-star cast, this movie could've been better, but that's not the point of the movie. This is merely a way to get a few laughs and have Tom Cruise do his best dancing since Risky Business. |

I don't know why so many people i know were knocking this movie. Tropic Thunder was hilarious! Ben Stiller and Jack Black are comedy GOLD but Robert Downey Jr. STEALS THE SHOW as Kirk Lazarus...the method actor who "plays the dude playing a dude disguised as another dude". While Downey Jr. definitely has most memorable/quotable lines in the film, the entire cast makes this movie work on the levels that it needs to. Even Tom Cruise redeemed his image and shoddy career as of late in my ways with his part in what is in my opinion, THE comedy of the Summer, take that, Pineapple Express.

I thought this movie was quite entertaining in the least but at times it felt a little slow and unfunny. There were good amounts of funny parts but it was not all laugh out loud funny in some parts. Downey Jr's performance is the best thing about the movie and probably the fake trailers at the beginning as well. Because he was the only character who seemed to be different than the rest in his pigment, it was a definite performance and one that is not racist but rather a testament to what actors go through to play all these different characters and the means they go through to play them. This is further complemented by the conversation that takes place between Downey and Stiller In which (spoilers) they talk about what lengths people go through to play retards in movies. I can see how mentally challenged people can be offended by this but it is true in a way. Never go full retard as Downey says to Stiller talking about his performance in Simple Jack in which he went full retard and did not win an oscar. But when all is said and done, this was definitely an entertaining movie. Cruises part although funny at first becomes stained and a little unfunny as it seems to be a repeat of what was said before. Although what was the best part about Downey's performance was when they go to rescue Stiller and he pretends to be a farmer only to reveal that he is a lead farmer with tow m-16s concealed in his coat. |

It was clearly intended for children, but it was the most action packed Star Wars made, and you cant argue with that.. The only thing that really really pissed me off about it was the padawan. I mean, obviously the story wouldnt be what it was without her, but I just didnt like the stupid little nicknames she gave everything and everyone. It could have been better, but it also could have been a lot worse. I thought it was fine.
...Oh yeah, and wtf was up with Jabba's uncle? Holy crap everything that came out of his mouth just made me feel ashamed to be in the theater. |

it was ok.....
Not sure where it fits in in the Star Wars time frame.....
This film is getting worse in my mind as I think over it.....
It starts & there's alot of action, but it's difficult to keep on any character as the writing is bland; one person says "Yadda yadda", the next says "Yidda, yidda"!.
Only 3 of the actors from Star Wars films leant thier voices, Kenny Baker, Samual L. Jackson & Christopher Lee...
The film doesn't progress well, it's all too confusing, the characterisations are weak, the story line itself is just boring. |

Funny nonstop from start to finish. This film was a spoof within a spoof, and had the balls to play it serious the entire time, never laughing at itself. That had to have been extremely hard.
Usually when a star-studded cast get together, its a laugh here and there, inside jokes galore, and you forget about it the next day, primarily because one star usually ends up outdoing the rest. But as funny and hilarious as Downey Jr. was, every other actor was spot on and it meshed into one of the funniest movies I have seen in recent memory. I mean, COME ON, Tom Cruise as a bald fat guy dancing? I didn't know that guy had a sense of humor! That alone was worth the price of the movie (5 bucks).
This is a stupid movie for smart people. |

Star Wars: The Clone Wars
|
For every single thing that "Clone Wars" does right, it gets at least two different things wrong. The art style makes the clones, droids and Yoda look especially cool, but the humans and aliens look like crap and animate poorly. The soundtrack is sometimes good, but could they seriously not afford the original theme song?! The action scenes are mildly entertaining, but every single time someone talks, I want to shove a lightsaber in my ear. And I start to dislike this movie even more because it's so pointless! I don't care about Jabba the Hut's son (though I do wonder how the son was born to begin with), nor do I want to hear about whats-her-face being trained by Anakin. Nothing here is really at stake, and it just goes to show that this is a moneygrab by Lucasfilms and the Cartoon Network in order to ensure that the TV series will be a successful one. Hopefully it will be successful because it's fun to watch, not just because "Star Wars" is in the title. Let's just forget about this one, shall we? |

Star Wars: The Clone Wars
|
As a pure, no-holds-barred action film, Star Wars: The Clone Wars is great. It has some of the best action scenes in any Star Wars media, and two really good lightsaber duels.
Unfortunately, that's all the movie really has to offer. There's hardly anything other than the nearly non-stop action, and it's even more unbalanced than the very unbalanced Star Wars: Clone Wars cartoon series. Moreover, this feels more like a long TV episode than an actual movie. While this might be understandable in that this movie leads into the upcoming TV series, the producers of this film should have either made this movie a proper movie or just not have made it at all. You can feel the TV-ness of this movie most notably in its weak plot motivation (Jabba the Hutt's son gets kidnapped? They must really have run out of ideas) and the excessively rapid pacing - the movie moves between scenes so fast that I was surprised they didn't cut off characters' lines mid-sentence. Speaking of which, the dialogue is horrendous and sounds like it was written by and for first-graders, and the voice acting that delivers it is quite poor. With the exception of the actors who actually returned from the other movies (Christopher Lee, Samuel L. Jackson, and Anthony Daniels) the voice actors all deliver their lines in a way that exaggerates the worst in their characters (Anakin, Ahsoka) or their characters' nuances (Obi-Wan). It's so bad it makes a mockery of the characters.
While I normally love fast-paced, high-action films, The Clone Wars took it to the unpleasant extreme. This movie convincingly demonstrates that you need to have some balance, even a little bit. |

This movie tried way too hard to be funny. Way. Too. Hard. Once upon a time, comedies used to actually rely on being clever and innovative and, yes, they could be raunchy too, but not to the point where you feel violated or like you need a shower after someone makes a joke. Jack Black's ramblings about sucking dick made me yearn for shower or even sink. I do not need to hear that, nor get the mental image of him doing it.
Another thing I can't stand about comedies anymore is fuck. FUCK. You laughing? Me either. I don't really see how saying fuck a lot is supposed to be funny, yet everytime some one said it, yelled it, alluded to it, everyone exploded with laughter. Now in the scenario where Robert Downey Jr. yells, "I'm a lead farmer, muthafucka!" that's funny. Why? Cause it's Robert Downey Jr. pulling a Samuel L. Jackson. Not just saying fuck to say fuck.
I had heard that Tom Cruise had a supposedly 'amazing' cameo, but uh...it didn't do it for me. At all. Every second he was on the screen it made me want to leave. Sure, it might have been a cute joke if it would have actually been a cameo. He was probably in a good 20 minutes of the movie and it felt like 40. Every other brief cameo was funny because they were in and out before the joke got too stale and repetitive.
Basically I found the irreverent and random jokes to be the funniest, and everything that was supposed the be the big piece joke wasn't. Ben Stiller and the severed head. Not funny. Ben Stiller throwing the kid. Not funny. Ben Stiller killing a panda. Not funny. Just stupid and overwrought.
What did I like about it? The cast was pretty good, save Jack Black and Ben Stiller. Robert Downey Jr. is always amazing, but the main thing I liked about everyone else [Brandon T. Jackson, Jay Baruchel, and Nick Nolte] is that they were playing their characters without trying to be over-the-top lunatic funny like everyone else, which in turn made them funnier by comparision.
The other thing that surprised me about this movie was how great the cinematography was and how action-y the action sequences were. Comedy movies usually look like they were filmed on 2 dollars, and comedy/action movies usually focus more on the funny than the boom boom. This was the opposite. I can honestly say I thought it worked better as an action movie. Kung Fu Panda and Get Smart were funnier. |

While watching this film, I was reminded of a Mark Twain quote: "Cheer up. The worst is yet to come." This applies to the five lead actors in Tropic Thunder, a film, which is based off a book by a former Vietnam vet (Nick Nolte). The actors, unwittingly, think they're filming a movie, but are in fact, thrust into a war against druglords.
As the film opens, we're treated to three faux movie trailers and one commercial. Each displaying the actor's latest films. These set off the laughs right away. Then we get a narration by Nolte, who plays "Four Leaf" Tayback. We see a destructive battle in Vietnam going on, actually a scene from the movie, Tropic Thunder (the one in the film). Ben Stiller plays Tugg Speedman, an action star who's trying to ditch the cheesy action films and go for something a little more dramatic. He's also trying to recover from his latest film, where he portrayed a mentally challenged farmhand with a gift for reading horses minds. We're told that the film was a critical failure (dubbed "one of the worst films of all time") and a box-office bomb. Robert Downey, Jr. plays Kirk Lazarus, a Russell Crowe-type actor who's so into method acting, he undergoes skin pigmentation to portray an African-American soldier. We also get Jeff Portnoy, the Eddie Murphy of the group. A comic actor with a serious heroin addiction. The other two are rapper-turned-actor Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson) and newcomer Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel). They can't seem to get serious about the film. Fed up with everything, the film's director (Steve Coogan), takes advice from "Four Leaf" and thrusts them into the jungle wilds, with hidden cameras watching their every move. Only, when they're left on their own, they think they're still filming, especially Speedman, who doesn't know that the druglords are, in fact, killer druglords.
What's their to say about this film? It's hilarious in every way. I've always been a fan of the movie-within-a-movie genre, and this definitely reaches the top of my list. Downey, Jr. is the best of all (and not that controversial), but the rest of the cast does an excellent job. Stiller's direction is great. We also get hilarious support from Matthew McConaughey as Tugg's agent and Tom Cruise as an egomanical, bald, overweight producer. Much to my surprise, Tom Cruise is freakin' hilarious in this role. Tropic Thunder is explosive in every way. |

Considering the critical hoopla, a major disappointment! Was the lack of creativity a casuality from the writer's strike? Im looking at the other reviews below questioning if I even saw the same movie beyond the first half hour. Robert Downey Jr. and (dare I spoil the surprise) Tom Cruise were the only redeemable qualities in this movie. I got a kick out of how they elevated the mediocre material that I pray to God doesnt get a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nod. At least "Southland Tales" was trying to tell us something. Though not the glorious train wreck as the Richard Kelley 2007 disaster, Ben Stiller's ambitious, self-indulgent film derailed from its original destination. |
